Additional Details

Later variant issue of this classic and rare map. While it is difficult to date the various Norman maritime charts, we believe the present variant was issued as early as 1803 or possibly later. This copy contains no cartouche on the sheet with Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, but the coastal mappings appear to be exactly the same. However, there are great differences on the left hand sheets in the mapping of the interior. On this variant the mapping in Connecticut ends shortly above New London, Ripton and Ridgefield. On the original a much larger area is mapped. Here it has been burnished out and replaced by 8 engraved elevations or recognition views of the coastline as seen from the sea, with a group of 5 elevations over New London and an additional 3 elevations over Fairfield County. We find no records of this variant coming to auction.
